A LITTLE HALLOWEEN GATHERING
I invited a few girlfriends over for little Halloween gathering last night and I wanted to share all the festive decor I came up using mostly Dollar Tree or hand crafted goodies. This shin dig has been in my head and the preparation stages for over a month so I've had plenty of time to gather a little of this and a little of that plus come up with a crafty gift or two for my guests.

THE FUN OF HALLOWEEN DECOR
I haven't always embraced Halloween. There was a time when I was careful to go the "cute" route with happy pumpkins and bales of hay (not that there is anything wrong with that) sticking to what would naturally occur in my decor.

While we were in Texas a few weeks ago my grandson missed one of his good friends birthday parties. I know there will be plenty of birthday parties but a friend that moved a town away was going to be there and he was especially bummed not to see him.
When we got back I decided to contact the boys mom (thank goodness for facebook in this case) and see if he could come over for a play date. She thought it was a great idea so I decided why not invite a few friends to add to the fun.
We (by that I mean I) decided to make it a Halloween themed event. Not wanting to invest a lot of money, I headed down to my local Dollar Tree and picked up a few fun and scary things.
I threw a festive quilt over the buffet table, put out a few snacks and just like that we had ourselves a quick pop up Halloween party.
Needless to say, it was a big hit. All six boys had a fun time and enjoyed being able to help themselves to as many snacks as they wanted.
Can I just say it is so much easier entertaining for small people. They didn't care about dust bunnies or dishes in the sink...or maybe I didn't care, which is probably more important. They just had fun.

a little halloween in the house
I normally don't do much decorating inside for Halloween but this year I was inspired by all the fun displays I have been seeing online.
And my newly painted white hutch provided the perfect backdrop for a little spooktacular decor. Not too much as I got a late start and most of the Halloween stuff is gone by labor day...but just enough to get us all in the fun spirit of the holiday.
My grandson helped me spookify the front porch with spider webs, bugs and all manor of creepy, crawly things and I'll be back to share all that fun with you later in the week.
What about you do you decorate for Halloween or is yours more of a fall display? Have you posted your pics somewhere? Invite me over for a virtual tour, I'd love to come see.

the magic age of Halloween...
My grandkids, at four and five, have hit that magic age for Halloween. They are finally old enough to glow with the excitement of wearing their costumes, going to parties and oh yes, all that candy and they have a few years to go before the thought of smashing a pumpkin even enters their sweet little heads.
Today promises to be a busy one starting out with the kindergarten parade, followed by the school carnival, candy and pictures at grandma's and then on to a good friends for Nacho Night and trick or treating. I wish I could bottle up the excitement in those little ones and save if for a gloomy day.

How to make wooden Halloween blocks
I put together a little tutorial of the wooden block Halloween sign for you. I had an extra set of wood blocks already cut out so it only took me hour to complete it from start to finish. This is definitely a project you can get done in an afternoon.
To start I had my hubby cut out small wooden blocks (130 of them) from some 3/4 x 1.5 inch scrap lumber he already had laying around. My finished blocks are roughly 1.5 x 2 inches but whatever size you have will work out fine. You could even use store bought wooden alphabet blocks.
Once cut I lightly sanded the sides so that there was no rough edges that might splinter and then I painted them black with some crafters acrylic paint. As you can see, I left one side partially unpainted since I was going to be adhering paper to it anyway.
One light coat is really all you need and it should dry rather quickly. In fact, by the time I finished the last block the first one was dry enough to continue onto the next step.
Cut Halloween paper slightly smaller than your wooden blocks. (I used "Thrilling" by Authentique.) Using a gel medium such as Modge Podge begin adhering the paper to the unpainted side of your blocks. When you modge podge always layer gel/paper/gel being careful to press down firmly and rub out any air bubbles beneath the paper. Nothing does a better job of doing this than your fingers.
I used my Silhouette machine to cut out the letters in black cardstock but you could use stamps, punches or even print them out on your computer. Once you've adhered the paper, attach your letters in the same manner, layering gel/paper/gel. The gel will dry clear but I always rub as much of it off as possible so that it doesn't look gloppy.
Allow blocks to dry thoroughly before distressing the edges with black chalk ink.
Told ya...Easy. Peasy.

a little halloween sign
I've been having fun researching tips and products for organizing a wardrobe closet and jewelry display. It seems to have ignited my desire to streamline and revamp others areas of my home as well.
I have a to do list that keeps growing by the day which always excites me. For the first time in a while I am ready to feather my nest.
Before I share the guest room progress with you I wanted to show you the two projects we did at my Fall Pinterest party earlier in the month starting with this little Halloween sign.
These cute little block letters were so simple to create thanks to my dear hubby who cut 130 blocks of wood in the week prior to my party.
If I thought he wouldn't run the other way, I would have him cut me another batch for Christmas but right now I think the memory it just a little to fresh.

Thank you for your sweet comments on my post yesterday. I agree with those of you who are frustrated with the fashion industry not focusing on those of us who are not twenty something and a size 2. You have made me brave enough to make the fashion at 50 posts a regular thing.

First off of course is one of the inspiration photos from my Halloween fun pinterest board. I love so much about this room and table setting and will be incorporating a couple of things into my party décor this Friday.
I will be using orange and black but I want to soften it a bit with creamy whites and burlap. I made up some tissue paper flowers to hang out of plain orange and a fun black and cream polka dot I found at Target.
I love the paper straw craze and have been using them for my quilting group gatherings so I went on Etsy and ordered a few more. I am crossing my fingers that they make it here before Friday...
The miniature paper cupcake liners will be used in a way you aren't expecting but that's all I can say about that now.
I finished the goody bags for my guests and will be working on little recipe holder books for them today. This is too much fun to be called work. I am one lucky lady.
I will be back soon to let you in on how this qualifies as a job...wink, wink.

the seasons, they are a changing...
If it were possible to deny the end of summer is near, my grandson starting kindergarten yesterday just may dash the last hope of that not being true. Yep, the seasons they are a changing...
The buzz in my craft room has definitely taken an autumn turn.
I was asked to teach at a good friends birthday party in a couple of weeks with her only request being that it be Halloween in theme. My mind got to whirling and twirling and I came up with this cute and kind of spooky mixed media canvas.
The paper is from Graphic 45 and I love that it has just the right amount of cuteness to ghoulishness ratio.
I am preparing a few of the party decorations as well and will be sharing those with you soon.
And for those of you wondering, grandma made it through the first day of kindergarten with only a few tears shed and a little bit of moping. Grandboy on the other hand, had a wonderful day!

yes, I said Halloween
Just popping in to say that I listed a few of these adorable fabric Halloween banners in my shop today.
I was trying to build an inventory before reopening the shop and I am working at it but these were just so stinking cute that I couldn't resist sharing them now.
They measure approximately ten feet from end to end and they are double sided so that no matter where you hang them they are just as cute from either direction.
I will be adding other seasonal items shortly as well as some more vintage pillow cases.
I can't believe it's almost that time of year.

vintage halloween - mini home tour
My hubby and I took a little much needed vacation time this week. We took a leisurely drive up the coast, took the grand babies to the pumpkin patch, visited a local amusement park and even managed to tackled a few projects on the home front as well. Now I have so much to share that I hardly know where to start.
Because I never seem to color in the lines, I think I'll start with my Friday outing and work backwards from there.
My sister in law and I planned a little shopping excursion to a few of our favorite stores that are all decorated for the holidays. I never arrive at her house during any holiday season without my camera in hand and Friday was no exception.
These photos are all from here charming home. She is a collector of vintage and has such a knack for display. I've learned never to make a quizzical face at her purchases because she always has something brewing in that creative mind of hers.
She claims not to be crafty and says she can't sew but somehow manages to transform adorable fabric into pillows and slipcovers in the blink of an eye...
give her a few picks of seasonal goodness and she works her magic...
She has a wonderful collection of quilts and vintage table cloths and is not afraid to use them. That's one of the things I admire about her...she somehow manages to always put the love of people above the love of things.
I have more of her vintage Halloween collection to share tomorrow...and then maybe you can help me convince her to start sharing some of her talent with the blog world herself.
